Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate gross from net?
Net amount times 1.19 at 19% (times 1.07 at 7%). Example: 100 € net is 119 € gross, of which 19 € is VAT.
How do I calculate net from gross?
Gross amount divided by 1.19 at 19% (by 1.07 at 7%). Example: 119 € gross is 100 € net. Do not simply subtract 19%, because the 19% refers to the net amount.
When does 19% apply, when 7%?
The standard rate in Germany is 19%. The reduced rate of 7% applies to certain goods and services, for example many foods and books. Whether your case qualifies is for a tax adviser or the tax office to say.
What applies to small businesses?
Small businesses under section 19 of the German VAT Act (UStG) do not show VAT on invoices. The invoice total then equals the price, and the calculator at 0% fits.
